Chuck Schumer has been in Democratic Leadership for twenty years. During that time, extremists have been empowered to assault hardworking Americans, crushing Democratic opposition as they steamroll our rights and blow holes in the social safety net.
Democrats and people all across the political spectrum have suffered as MAGA has attacked communities while so-called leaders like Schumer have failed to even put up a fight.
Senator Schumer most recently capitulated to MAGA by caving to their wishes to fund the US government despite Elon Musk's promise to throw poor seniors in the street, leave children and veterans to the wolves, and destroy Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
We The People are alarmed about the state of our country, and disappointed at the inability of Senate leadership to mount a meaningful defense of our values and our civil rights.

Why should Schumer be removed?Senator Schumer completely misunderstands how to fight MAGA and misreads this moment in history. We need a leader who can serve as principles opposition. Unfortunately, he has shown that he does not know how to do so.

Won't shutting down the government just hurt poor people?Government dysfunction to benefit the wealthy hurts the poor. Elon Musk's DOGE is a primary driver of government dysfunction in America today. The only leverage to stop DOGE and negotiate against it was to refuse to be a collaborator in the Musk-Trump agenda. As AOC said: "This turns the federal government into a slush fund for Donald Trump and Elon Musk," the congresswoman added. "It sacrifices congressional authority, and it is deeply partisan. And so to me, it is almost unthinkable why Senate Democrats would vote to ... hand the few pieces of leverage that we have away for free when we've been sent here to protect Social Security, protect Medicaid and protect Medicare.” Schumer's failure to understand that has given credibility to MAGA at a time when they must continually be exposed for the clown car that they are. Schumer did not even have to loudly protest this budget. He simply had to organize senators not to sign on to it. He failed. If a budget is passed, it will be a budget that slashes necessary services. If it is stalled, the American people are given a say.

What would it take to remove Schumer from his post?His colleagues simply have to select a new leader. He can also step down.

Who should replace him?That is up to the Democratic Caucus in the Senate. At a bare minimum, whoever replaces him must agree to fight MAGA. Some other qualities that would be attractive in a Senate leader are the ability to communicate effectively, organize an opposition bloc to Musk’s dangerous ideas, mobilize grassroots volunteers, and clearly outline a vision for America based on material needs that overcome racial and social divides. In other words, the new leader must plan to make a real difference as opposed to performative action.

Doesn't this just divide us at a time when we need unity?Unifying behind actions that empower divisive people is not unity. Bending the knee is not a unifying act simply because it ends a fight, and sometimes unity among everyone isn't possible. We face a decision: to join Musk and other oligarchs, or to side with the people they are hurting. Schumer attempted to thread the needle. His strategic failure let us down and left us vulnerable to the oligarchs.

What if this leads to paying a political price that benefits Musk and Trump?We are paying the political price now because our leaders fell short in standing up to Musk and Trump. One of the worst things that happened to the United States in this era is when the Tea Party stood up to its leadership, won, and took power, paving the way for far right extremists to one day control the country. However, their actions are instructive to us: if any Democrat is unwilling or unable to fight for their constituents, then they should be challenged loudly and unapologetically. The path to getting America back on track runs through organizing and fighting for what we believe in, not compromising values to legitimize failed political leaders and their hollow promises.
